The Triumphal Arch of Skopje
Back to all places
As you step onto Pella Square, you are standing before Porta Macedonia, Skopje’s 21-meter-tall neoclassical triumphal arch. Completed in 2012 to commemorate 20 years of Macedonian independence, this white marble gateway was designed to mirror the grand monumental arches of Europe while carving the nation’s multi-layered history directly into stone.
Look closely at the relief panels decorating its exterior walls. As your eyes move across the marble facade, you are looking at a chronological storyboard of the region: from the ancient campaigns of Alexander the Great and Philip II, to the medieval era of Tsar Samuil and the Slavic enlighteners Saints Cyril and Methodius, up through the 1903 Ilinden Uprising and the declaration of independence in 1991.
Today, Porta Macedonia serves both as a physical gateway into the heart of the city and as a gathering place during national festivities and sports victories, bridging the historic themes of Skopje 2014 with modern civic life.
