Kapan Ann
Back to all places
Built in the 15th century during the height of the Ottoman period, Kapan An is one of the three remaining caravanserais that once formed the backbone of Skopje’s successful medieval trading center. During the Ottoman era, it functioned as a vital logistics hub, providing secure accommodation for international trade caravans, traveling merchants, and their livestock. The caravanserais also served as financial institutions in the Ottoman Empire. They were able to exchange the physical money into official documents, like checks, with which the merchants were able to trade with each other, without worrying about the safety of their funds. One of the reasons why they look like small fortresses.
The building follows a traditional and efficient Ottoman design intended for commerce and rest:
• The Ground Floor: It was surrounded by archways leading to stables and storage rooms, where merchants kept their horses, cattle, and goods.
• The Upper Floor was reserved for the guests, featuring rooms for sleeping and areas for social interaction among travelers.
Today, Kapan An has transitioned from a fortified inn into what visitors describe as a "hidden gem" and a vibrant social center. To reach its heart, you must often pass through restaurant tables and descend stairs, emerging into an open courtyard that feels like traveling through time. It is like a medieval service station; while the horses and heavy cargo of the silk routes have been replaced by coffee cups and conversation, the stones continue to offer the same sanctuary to the modern traveler that they provided five centuries ago.
