Introduction of Skopje
Back to all places
Welcome to Skopje, the dynamic and historically rich capital of North Macedonia! Nestled along the banks of the Vardar River, Skopje today is a thriving city, home to nearly half a million people, where ancient traditions meet bold modern transformations. North Macedonia became independent from Yugoslavia in 1991, marking a new era for Skopje as it continued to grow and reshape itself. Yet, the city’s roots extend far back, and Skopje has seen centuries of transformation — from its role as a Bulgarian capital under Tsar Samuil in the 10th century, to its significant position as a center of commerce and culture in the Ottoman Empire.
One of the most defining events in Skopje’s recent history was the devastating earthquake of 1963, which left much of the city in ruins. But the resilient spirit of Skopje shines through today, especially in the cityscape itself, where you’ll see a fascinating blend of restored historic sites and ambitious new constructions. In 2010, North Macedonia launched Skopje 2014, an ambitious urban renewal project that added a number of statues, museums, and neoclassical-inspired structures to the city center, sparking conversations and intrigue among locals and visitors alike.
On this tour, you’ll step into Skopje’s past and present, beginning with the Bridge of Civilizations. We will talk about the parents of Alexander the Great, but also about the history of the Cyrillic alphabet. I will walk you through the Old Bazaar, a bustling hub of life since the Ottoman times. It’s an enchanting labyrinth of narrow streets, brimming with artisanal shops, traditional restaurants, and stunning historic mosques. Moving up to the Kale Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking the city, you’ll gain a commanding view and insights into the fortress’s significance from ancient times through to today. From there, you’ll be able to admire the city from above.
Back in the heart of Skopje, you’ll walk along the Macedonia Boulevard, the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, where modern shops, cafes, and grand statues line the way, culminating in Macedonia Square, with its iconic statue of Alexander the Great, a symbol of national pride and heritage. Our tour will end with a visit to the Mother Teresa Memorial House, a tribute to the beloved humanitarian who was born right here in Skopje.
Prepare to uncover the many layers of Skopje: a city of resilience, a place where history, tradition, and contemporary culture converge in fascinating ways. Let’s dive in and explore the unforgettable spirit of Skopje!
